Adaxalamorex
Adaxalamorex was a wyvern. (shown on the left) One of the nine sentient species on the parallel planet of Tolive. Colin first met her in her human form of Ada (shown on the right) in the Southside Grill in Buffalo, Wyoming.
What isn’t mentioned in the book is that Adaxalamorex was 173 years old. Much of her adult life was spent as a mercenary on Tolive. In that role she was very effective, amassing a small fortune and enjoying the lifestyle that fortune could provide. But Adaxalamorex had and itch she couldn’t scratch. She seemed to succeed easily at anything she attempted but nothing brought her a sense of satisfaction or fullment. In the last fifty years she had spent a lot of time on Earth as Ada hoping to fill the void in her life. She attended three different universities earning three degrees. She became fluent in English, French, and Spanish and traveled extensively. But she never found what she was looking for. Sociopaths seldom do. Finally, she returned to Tolive and resumed her role as a mercenary. Shortly thereafter, she leaned of Clan Duncan’s plot to kill Colin. The rest, as they say, is history.
Douglas Duncan
Douglas was the second of three sons born to his father, Gilroy. Now stop laughing. Gilroy was a popular name among the clans of Tolive at the time. The name means “serves the red-haired lord”.
As a young man, Douglas was devious and vindictive. In those days, more than one rival disappeared without a trace.
Disliked by his older brother and seen as a disappointment by his father, his prospects for becoming Chief of Clan Duncan were slim. But Douglas was an optimist, or perhaps he could be called an opportunist. While his father groomed his oldest son, Brice, for clan leadership, Douglas and the younger brother, Farlane plotted.
Douglas felt he was destined for, and therefore entitled to, the mantle of clan leadership. Farlane’s only ambition was to kill people. So, he spent his time in the dueling ring where he became the best duelist on Tolive.
At the relatively young age of sixty-three, Douglas became clan chief the day after his father died of a sudden, mysterious, illness and Brice was killed in a hunting accident. Apparently, a bit of poison and a well-placed arrow was all it took to make Douglas clan chief and Farlane the clan champion. Each had an iron grip on their positions until the day Douglas sent a wizard into Colin Duncan’s bedroom intent on killing him.
Maxmore
Lycanthropes naturally mate for life and Maxmore is no exception. What sets him apart is the attention he pays to his mate, Lormarcy. If he were human, he would be considered a good husband and father, though he would not use those words. Lycanthropes can’t transit like most of the other sentient species on Tolive, so they tend to keep to themselves and seldom shift to human form.
To provide a better life for his family, Maxmore began taking contracts from wizards six years before he met Colin. The process was simple. Clan Sinclair was the first to see the advantage of using lycanthropes as contract labor. They set up offices in North Erradale, the home of much of the lycanthrope population. These offices are much like Union Halls where lycanthropes can hang out and wait for work. During that time, Maxmore developed a low opinion of humans in general and wizards in particular. Colin changed all that by treating him with dignity and respect. The rest of the story is revealed in the book.
